The Burial Tide
This might be my favorite horror novel of 2025. Definitely made my top 10 favorite horror books of all time.
From the first page to the last, I was hooked. I needed to know what was happening. Why was our main character buried alive? Did she actually die? What is happening on this island?
Our main character, Mara, digs herself out of her own grave, then breaks into our second main character's artist's stay cottage. Delcan finds a woman, who is supposed to be dead, raiding his fridge.
It's a shocking way to start a book.
The setting is an island off the coast of Ireland. It's a tiny island where locals are reluctant to interact with outsiders.
The book is steeped in Irish folklore and legend. It's a gory, amazing take on these mythical creatures. They are terrifying. It's beautifully well done.
As we go through Mara's story, she and the readers know something is wrong. She is being told what her life is; she wants to trust her husband, her friends, the people who knew her before she lost her memory, but there is just something off about them all. For me, it started with the 'test' that Dr. Quinn has Mara perform. Guessing her relatives' names with no memory. And somehow getting them all right.
The major red flag was her husband, Cain, and their home, which they supposedly shared.
My theory was that Cain had done something to Mara, she forgot, was buried alive, and now he must not let her find out. I was a little right, Cain had a significant role to play. But the book unfolds beautifully with a story steeped in terrible tradition, folklore, and dark secrets that the isladers are desperate to keep. All centered around Mara.
The switching perspectives is a fantastic way for us to gain insight into our characters. But the author does a tremendous job of keeping us questioning what is really happening. He drops hints that we only later realize are hints. He casts doubts, so Mara and the reader are asking if there really is a terrible secret everyone's keeping from Mara or if Mara is just paranoid.
But once the story unfolds, the question becomes whether Mara, Delcan, and Natille can escape.
This will be a shorter review than I usually do because I need everyone to read this book. I don't want to give too much away. This is a book that keeps you questioning and wanting until the very end. Oh! And the end! Satisfactory. The best! This book and its end were everything I could have wanted!
Please, I beg of you to read this book. This is the type of horror I love.
Thank you for reading.
